UN Habitat

GPEAN is actively involved in UN Habitat events and activities, coordinated by Bruce Stiftel, who is a member of the GPEAN Council as the UN-liaison of GPEAN. Following are examples of the activities that GPEAN carried out as contributions to the UN Habitat events:

  • A chapter to the 2009 Global Report named Planning for Sustainable Cities
  • A chapter to the 2016 World Cities Report
  • Habitat III Meeting in 2016, organizing a side event called ‘Capacity Building for the New Urban Agenda: Roles for Universities’
  • ‘Planners Roundtable’ during the COP-23 (United Nations Climate Change Conference) in Bonn in November 2017
  • Planners for Climate Action (P4CA) initiative, launched during the COP-23 as a stakeholder group
  • Two GPEAN panels at the 9th World Urban Forum (WUF) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in February 2018:
    • ‘Education of Planners to Meet the Needs of the New Urban Agenda and SDGs’
    • ‘Planners Actions in Response to the Challenges of Climate Change’
  • UN-Habitat Assembly (UNHA1), Nairobi, May 2019 with side events, GPEAN sessions, and a P4CA session
