GPEAN organizes a World Planning Schools Congress (WPSC) every five years, with a view to bring together planning educators and scholars from the 11 regional associations of planning schools.
So far, five WPSCs have been organized:
- In 2001 in Shanghai
- In 2006 in Mexico City
- In 2011 in Perth
- In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro
- In 2022 in Bali

The sixth WPSC will take place in July 2026 in Helsinki Capital Region, Finland, hosted jointly by Aalto University, University of Helsinki, and Tampere University. The congress is themed “Peripheral Visions: Rethinking Planning”. GPEAN invites the world planning community to join and contribute to the World Planning Schools Congress in July 2026.
