AESOP Message for Peace and Justice

Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) released a message for peace and justice. The statement can be accessed at http://www.aesop-planning.eu/news/en_GB/2022/03/07/readabout/for-peace-and-justice and reads as follows: We appeal to the Russian Government to stop its aggression against Ukraine, stop the war, destruction, and violence against civilians, stop the threats of using nuclear weapons, stop misinformation attacks, stop the persecution of citizens fighting for peace and against the war in Ukraine.   All of us suffer jointly with the Ukrainian and people from other war-affected nations for the tragedy caused; we are humanly close to all our colleagues, friends, and those suffering. We express our commitment to universal values of dialogue and mutual respect. As representatives of the Association of European Schools of Planning, we hope we will return soon in peace to a renewed responsibility for space and responsibility for life. This can be done jointly with our Ukrainian and other colleagues worldwide based on mutual understanding and absolute protection of our planet

The 7th Volume of Dialogues is out

The 7th Volume of Dialogues in Urban and Regional Planning is out. Edited by Andrea Frank and Christopher Silver, the theme of this new volume is Transformative Planning: Smarter, Greener and More Inclusive Practices. The book features contributions from leading planning scholars and practitioners who critically examine how transformative planning practices seek to reduce inequalities, promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, achieve gender equality, improve human health and well-being, foster resilience of urban communities and protect the environment and thereby change urban planning paradigms. Several case studies of emerging transformative planning interventions illustrate practical ways forward. This seventh volume of Dialogues is dedicated to Dr. Vanessa Watson, AAPS, co-editor of volumes 1 and 2 of Dialogues in Urban and Regional Planning. Copies in hardback, paperback and eBook are available from Geography, Planning & Urban Studies at Routledge in: https://www.routledge.com/…/Silver…/p/book/9781032014166

Tribute to Vanessa Watson

Vanessa Watson, AAPS and GPEAN pioneer and friend On Wednesday 15 September 2021, the international planning community lost a formidable scholar and dedicated teacher. Vanessa’s prowess as urban thinker has been celebrated in many forums. Since her passing, we have received messages from possibly every continent on this planet. Her work is now a sizable and recognized part of the planning canon[1]. We could spend many words testifying to Vanessa’s many contributions to academia, including her profound effects on the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics, and the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town[2]. However, it is her role as one of the pioneers of both the Association of African Planning Schools (AAPS) and the Global Planning Education Association Network (GPEAN) that we would like to reflect on, since it is a legacy that is critically connected to the evolution of cooperation among planning schools. Leaders of the four associations, Asian Planning Schools Association (APSA), Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP; USA), Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP), and Australia and New Zealand Association of Planning Schools (ANZAPS), took the opportunity to convene a meeting of leaders of all the world’s planning school associations.   They were joined by six other associations representing schools in Africa, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Latin America, and the francophone world, in two days of meetings discussing the potential for future cooperation.  Although the ten associations reflected wide differences in organization, activities and politico-economic contexts,
